BRIDGTON — The Cans for Camp Ice Fishing Fundraiser was great fun for everyone who braved the January cold to participate in the event at Highland Lake.
The day was especially great for 11-year-old angler Lexi Brown of Bridgton who took home a Maine lifetime fishing license donated by Auburn Savings Bank for her 2.14-pound bass in the Kid’s Derby despite not having the heaviest fish of the day.
It was Gabe Clow of Sebago who caught the biggest fish of the day — a 2.7-pound bass — but offered the first place prize to Brown, first runner-up, after revealing that he already had a Maine lifetime fishing license. He accepted a week of summer camp as his prize instead.
Jarrett Levesque of Bridgton also took home a lifetime fishing license donated by NuImage Awnings for his 1.13-pound bass.
“It was really special what the first place winner, Gabe, did,” says derby official and organizer Shane Richards. “His kindness and generosity really captured the spirit of giving and caring that Cans for Camp represents.”
The day-long fishing derby fundraiser, organized by Richards for Grace Christian Church, raised funds to send 17 kids to camp at New Hampshire’s Camp Sentinel.
