RANGELEY — A 79-year-old Buxton woman was found lying in the middle of the Bald Mountain Road in Oquossoc at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, police Chief Dennis Leahy said.
Her car was found a mile away in a snowbank in a remote area of the road by a person who called 911.
She had severe hypothermia and was incoherent, he said.
There are camps on the road, but there is nothing in the area her car was found, he said. The road runs parallel to Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
The woman was treated by NorthStar EMS paramedics and taken by ambulance to the Charles Lindbergh Airport in Avon to be airlifted by a LifeFlight medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Leahy estimated the temperature when the woman was found was less than 10 below zero.
They do not know why the woman drove more than 100 miles from her home town to Rangeley or when her car hit the snowbank and got stuck, Leahy said.
Police officer Ron Wood contacted her son in California, who was going to contact his mother’s caretaker.
