Moroney led the Jeffs (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) with three goals and one assist, while Kane Haffey added two scores. Dylan Park and Mike Litner contributed a goal and an assist apiece.
Cody Tranbarger made 15 saves in goal for the Jeffs, who outshot the Bobcats 49-36, including a 30-21 edge in shots on goal. Moroney and Charlie Gill had five ground balls apiece, while Drew Kelleher won 11 of 18 faceoffs and was credited with 10 ground balls.
Bates senior captain Jack Strain scored a game-high five goals, one away from his career-high, to keep the Bobcats in the game. Bates goalie Joe Faria made a career-high 20 saves. Kyle Weber scored the Bobcats’ first goal, and Ken O’Friel scooped a team-high six ground balls.
Skiing
Bates women’s alpine team 5th in slalom
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Sophomore Kelsey Chenoweth and first-year Hannah Johnson placed 12th and 15th, respectively, in the women’s slalom to lead the Bates women’s alpine ski team to a tie with Dartmouth for fifth place out of 12 teams Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championships and St. Lawrence Carnival.
Chenoweth had her second-best slalom finish of the season, recording a two-run combined time of 1:57.45 for 12th place among 76 skiers. Johnson had a season-best day in 15th place at 1:57.56, 0.01 ahead of 16th-place Lizzie Kistler. First-year Brielle Antonelli placed 38th to finish out the squad’s scoring with 68 points.
Men’s alpine junior Cody Bullen placed 34th out of 73 competitors in the men’s slalom, at 1:59.84, while junior Tanner Dirstine took 50th place.
Bates’ Grossman earns first team honors
LAKE PLACID, N.Y.— Bates College senior Hallie Grossman wrapped up the EISA carnival season with an eighth-place finish in the women’s 15-kilometer classical race and a certificate for earning First Team All-East honors on Saturday at the NCAA East Region Championships and St. Lawrence Carnival.
Grossman finished eighth out of 69 competitors, covering the Mt. Van Hoevenburg 15K course in 54:14.1. The senior captain and soon-to-be four-time NCAA Championship competitor finished among the top eight in all 10 individual carnival races this season. Grossman wins First Team All-East honors as one of the top five performers on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association circuit this season.
Men’s basketball
UNH 65, Maine 56
Durham, N.H. — The University of Maine dropped its regular-season finale to conference rival New Hampshire 65-56.
Matt Miller led the Wildcats with 24 points on the day. The Senior, who already leads America East in three-point percentage, made 6-of-8 from behind the arc to give UNH the season sweep of the series. With the loss, Maine’s record drops to 3-26 overall and 2-14 in America East play, while New Hampshire improves their record to 18-10 and 11-5 in America East play.
Maine was led by Shaun Lawton who had 16 points on the day and nine rebounds, three other Black Bears reached double figures; Zarko Valjarevic had 11, Aaron Calixte and Troy Reid-Knight each scored 10 points to reach double digits for two straight games. This is the 12 game this season where three or more Black Bears have reached double figures in a game.
Women’s ice hockey
UConn 1, Maine 0 (OT)
ORONO — The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team lost to the University of Connecticut 1-0 in overtime at Alfond Arena Saturday afternoon. Maine falls to 10-19-3 on the season, while Connecticut improves to 11-17-8.
The stalemate continued into the overtime period until Rebecca Fleming found the back of the Maine net at (10:31). Reese Maccario led a 3-on-2 break, along with Margaret Zimmer and Rebecca Fleming. Zimmer received a pass from Maccario and fired a shot on Treacy. The Black Bear goaltender made the save but left a rebound. Rebecca Fleming picked up the loose puck and ended the quarterfinal series.
Meghann Treacy and Elaine Chuli combined to save all 19 shots on goal in the first period. Maine had the lone power play opportunity of the period, which was stonewalled by the Huskie netminder. he goaltenders were perfect again in the second period. Treacy and Chuli combined to save 24 shots on goal in the frame. Neither team had a power play opportunity.

Bates’ Enos wins shot put, weight throw
BOSTON — Senior five-time All-American Sean Enos won his second event title in as many days Saturday at the all-divisions Open New England Indoor Championships, capturing first place in the shot put with a season-best mark to lead the Bates men’s track and field team to eighth place out of 32 teams.
Enos went 15 centimeters beyond his previous season-best ark in the shot, with a top effort of 57-2.25. On Friday, he won the weight throw title at 65-3.25, a season-best effort by one centimeter over last week’s New England Division III championship mark. Enos’s performance came within eight inches of matching the team record set by former teammate David Pless ’13.
