LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen on Tuesday gave the go-ahead to have plans developed for using the former Livermore Falls high and middle schools.
John Cleveland, owner of Community Dynamics Corp. of Auburn, an economic development agency, said his proposal will include potential opportunities and risks should the town accept the buildings from Regional School Unit 73.
“This could be something new for the community,” he said.
The buildings could have public and private uses.
The board is expected to tour the high school at 3 p.m. Monday, March 9, and make a decision on it and the middle school at their March 17 meeting. RSU 73 Superintendent Kenneth Healey is expected to attend.
Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Louise Chabot said she believed the town should take the buildings.
“We don’t want just anyone to have them,” she said.
Town Manager Kristal Flagg said RSU 73 officials have said they hope to rent the locker rooms and some storage space at the high school if the town takes the building.
Area Youth Sports has also indicated interest in using part of the building.
Flagg said she told the board that if the town takes the buildings and later decides to sell them, the town would keep the money.
The middle school has been vacant for several years and the high school for two years.
In other matters, Flagg said this year’s assessment from Androscoggin County is $165,289, which is about $4,000 more than last year.
