RUMFORD — The Rumford Elementary School will host children’s author Marty Kelley at 6 p.m. on Family Literacy Night on Monday, March 9.
In addition, the school will host a book fair from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to preview books that day, and will be open from 5 to 6 p.m. for purchases, just before Kelley’s presentation.
An experienced speaker, Kelley writes and illustrates books for children of all ages. His presentations are a fun, fast-paced explanation of how he creates his stories, from initial ideas through rough drafts to the final copy, including how he creates illustrations.
In the past, he has been a second grade teacher, a baker, a cartoonist, a newspaper art director, a drummer in a heavy metal band, a balloon delivery guy, an animator, and lots of other things.
Kelley attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts to become an animator, but shortly after art school he went back to school and pursued a degree in elementary education. He taught second grade for several years before deciding to write and illustrate full time.
He has written and illustrated many children’s books, including: Fall Is Not Easy; Winter Woes; Summer Stinks; Spring Goes Squish; The Messiest Desk; Twelve Terrible Things; The Rules; A Cape!; and Fame, Fortune, and the Bran Muffins of Doom.
The book fair resumes on Tuesday, March 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
