RUMFORD — The newly formed Maine AllCare chapter for the River Valley Area held its first meeting on Feb. 28.

The chapter is part of an effort to join other Mainers in support of accessible and affordable health care coverage.

Joe Sirois will serve as chapter leader. Board members from the state were in attendance and answered questions from the perspective of physicians, legislators, lawyers and private citizens. Discussion centered around the need for a fair system that treats all its citizens equally.

Two attendees told of their experiences in Germany and Canada and Great Britain, where even as visitors they received needed health care at no cost. Others shared stories of hardworking but uninsured or underinsured American citizens who too often cannot afford treatment or medication.

The HealthCare Movie, a powerful documentary that dispels myths and traces the universal health care movement in Canada will be shown at the Rumford library at 4 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17.

The chapter agreed to regular meetings, with the goal of educating the public and publicizing pertinent legislative hearings. Anyone wishing to learn more about the movement or to receive emails should contact Sirois at 364-3913, or visit Maine AllCare at MaineAllCare.org.
