RUMFORD — Town Manager John Madigan announced spring cleanup will take place Monday, April 27, to Friday, May 8.

Items may be placed on the side of the road April 27. They include metal, bulky furniture, televisions and computers, brush, tires and wood no more than 4 feet long.

“They need to be kept separated,” Madigan said. “Pressure-treated wood must be separated; you can’t put that in with the regular wood. We have to dispose of that separately or else it costs us a lot of money in being able to sell wood chips for energy consumption.”

The town manager advised residents to have items out by 6 a.m. April 27. No return pickups will be made.

Public Works employees will pick up items from occupied residential properties only. The total amount of items taken from each residence must not exceed one pickup truck load.

Items not picked up include refrigerators with doors attached, automobiles, car batteries, commercial truck tires, skidder tires, propane cylinders, rocks, bricks, concrete, chemicals, paint, cardboard, firewood, tree stumps or demolished buildings. However, propane cylinders, rocks, bricks and firewood may be brought to the transfer station.

The two-week cleanup allows other member towns of the Northern Oxford Region Solid Waste district — Byron, Dixfield, Mexico and Roxbury — to use the free service at the transfer station beginning May 11.

“But anybody in Rumford can bring their own stuff to the transfer station at any time during that two-week period,” Madigan said. A current transfer station decal sticker is required on vehicles and is available at the town manager’s office.

“Please recycle more,” Board of Selectmen Chairman Greg Buccina said at the April 6 board meeting. “Every time we recycle, we save ourselves money.”
