1931 – 2015

Augusta — Marcel L. Raymond, 83, formerly of Lewiston, passed away peacefully Monday, April 13, after a long illness, with his loving family by his side at the Togus VA Regional Medical Center Hospice.

He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 9, 1931, the son of Alexandre I. and Leda (Tancrel) Raymond. Marcel attended schools in Lewiston and later graduated from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and also served his country in Germany.

After his military service, he continued his education graduating from the University of Ottawa with a master’s degree in education and a master’s degree in French.

He then relocated to Worcester, Mass., where he was active in the following organizations, the French Institute, the Harmony Club, Third Order of Benedictines, and was a life member of the DAV of Worcester. He also established the French Resource Center, “Chez Marcel.”

Marcel was also a well-known radio personality on L’Heure Francais on WCUW Worcester Public Radio for 25 years.

Marcel made his home in Worcester for 40 years, until he relocated to Lewiston in 2010 to be close to his family.

During his stay in Lewiston, he endowed a scholarship, the Marcel Raymond Scholarship for French Studies at the University of Maine at Augusta. He also donated his French resource material to UMA.

Survivors include two brothers, Gerard Raymond and wife, Patricia, of Lewiston, Bob Raymond and wife, Anita, of Old Orchard Beach; two sisters, Therese Royer and husband, Roger, of Harpswell, and Madeleine Raymond of Lewiston; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Tancrel of Hooksett, N.H.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Laurel.
