BUCKFIELD — Calvin Downey and Jesse Warren are headed toward engineering careers after graduation from Buckfield Junior-Senior High School next month.
‘s valedictorian and salutatorian will be among 36 students who will graduate on June 6.
Downey, the Class of 2015 valedictorian, plans to attend either Worcester Polytechnic Institute or the University of Maine to study mechanical engineering and physics.
Warren, the class salutatorian, wants to attend the UMaine to study computer science and computer engineering.
“I like technology. It’s fascinating to see what can be done,” said the son of Robin and Michelle Warren.
Downey wants to work in the nuclear fusion field.
“I think it’s a misunderstood industry. The science behind it is incredible,” said the son of Becky and Robert Downey.
Downey is also involved in music. He plays the base trombone in the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Wind Ensemble.
“I hope to continue it in college. It feels good and is something I enjoy and so people enjoy,” he said.
He was also in the All State Band, is the goal keeper for the soccer team, is a member of the chess club, math team and Glee Club.
Warren also enjoys music. He plays the tuba, baritone and bass guitar, sings in the Glee Club and performs in the school’s spring musicals. He also plays soccer.
Both seniors are members of the National Honor Society.
Downey said said he has always had a drive to succeed.
“My mom pushed a lot and my dad is a hard worker,” he said.
Warren, who was home-schooled for several years, said his graduation speech will likely focus on the future.
“We may not see each other anymore, but we’ll have great opportunities,” he said.
Warren advises underclassmen to work hard and get required work done sooner rather than later. He also believes that becoming involved in activities, such as a sporting team or theater, creates a bonding experience.
Downey said something he heard at a Maine Principals’ Association event struck a chord.
“To take risks. Sometimes they will fail but sometimes you learn you can really do something,” he said.
