WILTON — Ransom Consulting Inc. of Portland has secured the contract for an environmental assessment of the Forster Mill property, Town Manager Rhonda Irish told the Board of Selectpersons on Tuesday.

After foreclosing on the property, the town was approved for a Maine Department of Environmental Protection assessment and hazardous building material inventory for the site. DEP requested bids from environmental contractors for the work.

Irish expects the assessments to be done by mid-June and has requested Ransom provide information in time for the town’s annual meeting June 15.

The assessments will help the town determine how to follow environmental regulations to take care of the property, she previously said.

The roof and boiler room were not tested for asbestos when other asbestos abatement work was done. The inventory will tell whether there are still pockets of asbestos or lead around the site and give the town an estimate for abatement and disposal, she said.

The town worked with Ransom Consulting on the Wilton Tannery site.

In other business, Irish reminded the board that requests for proposals from potential developers for the Wilton Tannery site are due by May 1.

The board awarded a bid for printing 550 copies of the town report to Printing Warehouse of Wilton for $1,430.

Other bids for the work included Skowhegan Press for $1,327; two bids from Franklin Printing of Farmington for $2,775.30 and $3,214.09; and Snowman’s Group of Hermon for $1,118. The board added transportation costs for travel to Hermon to pick up the order to the quote for a total of $1,278.

Board members brought up the need to determine eight to 10 potential streetlights to shut off, as requested by voters at last year’s town meeting.

The condition of the McGrath Road was discussed. Although the road received an overlay a few years ago, a homeowner told Board of Selectpersons Chairman Scott Taylor that the road is dangerous.

Better monitoring of the transfer station was also discussed. Selectperson John Black recognized two people from another town dumping trash last weekend.

The potential to do more with Kineowatha Park was also brought up. There’s opportunity for more activities and potential revenue for the Recreation Department, Black said.
