Maine ranks 12th in the nation for being an eco-friendly state, according to a Wallet Hub report.

With billions of taxpayer dollars devoted to environmental protection and energy costs eating a significant portion of the average household’s income, WalletHub released its report Monday showcasing areas doing right and not so much right by Mother Earth.

In specific areas, Maine ranked:

12th: Air quality.
22nd: Water quality.
1st: Municipal solid waste recycled.
20th: Number of green (LEED) buildings per capita.
4th: Percentage of energy consumption from renewable sources.
16th: Energy-efficiency scorecard.
19th: Percentage of population not driving to work.
