PARIS — Oxford Hills erupted for nine runs in the first inning Wednesday and ended its 11-1 KVAC baseball victory over Cony in the fifth by virtue of the 10-run rule.

Bailey West cranked a bases-loaded triple in the fruitful frame. Brady LaFrance also drove in a run with a three-bagger.

It was ample support for junior hurler Blake Slicer, who allowed four hits, struck out four and walked four. He carried a shutout into the fifth.

LaFrance was 3-for-4 for the Vikings, who also got two hits apiece from West, Slicer and Tyler Curtis. Justin Rodrigue took the loss for Cony.

Spruce Mountain 9, Leavitt 6

TURNER — Spruce Mountain scored seven unearned runs in the sixth inning to sting Leavitt on opening day in baseball action Wednesday.

The Hornets (0-1) got a strong start from Mitchel Davis, who gave up just one run and struck out 12 through five innings. Chandler Lajoie suffered the loss for Leavitt.

Anthony York peppered three hits, including a double for the Phoenix (1-0), while Matt Vigue drove in two runs in the winning effort.

Brunswick 4, Mt. Blue 2

BRUNSWICK — Picher John Parker went 3-for-3 with a double an two RBIs at the plate and 6.2 innings on the mound as Brunswick notched a 4-2 victory over Mt. Blue in baseball action Wednesday.

The Dragons (1-0) fired up the run production with three of the earned variety in the first inning and capped their scoring with an unearned tally in the fourth.

The Cougars (0-1) picked up an unearned run in the sixth and an earned run in the seventh.

Softball

Mt. Blue 19, Brunswick 5

BRUNSWICK — Mt. Blue was on the receiving end of 16 walks as they coasted to a 19-5 victory in the late innings over Brunswick in softball action Wednesday.

The Cougars broke open a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning, drawing seven walks and collecting three key base hits from Katelyn Wells, Mariah Martin and Taylor Burke.

Moesha Harrington had an RBI single in the fourth to plate Caitlin Kane and tie the game for the Cougars.

Hannah Escoe took the mound loss for the Dragons, while teammates Emily Girardin and Alyssa Dunston produced one hit each.

Oxford Hills 17, Cony 4

AUGUSTA — Oxford Hills took a commanding 17-4 win over Cony in KVAC softball action Wednesday.

The Vikings (1-0) scattered 13 hits through six innings as Anna Winslow and Shannon Fillebrown recorded two RBIs each.

Pitcher Erika Whitman earned the win for Oxford Hills, while pitcher Arika Brochu took the loss for the Rams (0-1).

Poland 3, Kennebunk 2

POLAND — Poland rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to dispatch Kennebunk 3-2 in EWC softball action Wednesday.

The Rams outperformed the Knights 9-6 in the hitting department. But, Poland managed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the final frame.

Pitcher Kylie Martin allowed just one hit and struck out seven to notch the mound win for Poland.

Ally King had two hits and two RBIs for Kennebunk in the losing effort.

Leavitt 18, Spruce Mountain 8

TURNER — Leavitt erupted for 11 runs in the first inning en route to a 18-8 triumph over Spruce Mountain in softball action Wednesday.

The Hornets were powered by Katie DeBlois with three hits and Alanna Hartford with two hits. DeBlois posted four RBIs’, while Hartford plated another three.

Ang Ryan and Jess Keene led the Phoenix on offense with two hits each.
