1930 – 2015

AUGUSTA — Joseph A. St. Michel Jr., 84, of Durham passed away at the Maine Veterans’ Home on Wednesday, April 22.

He was born in Marlborough, Mass., the son of Joseph and Ellen Collins St. Michel. He attended local schools and graduated in 1947.

Joseph was married to Helena Quarton, and together they started their family. He spent two years in the U.S. Army before becoming a computer programmer.

Joe loved to work on model trains and was an active member of the Great Falls Model Railroad Club. He served as a town selectman for Durham and was a member of the board of trustees for the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta. He was a member of the American Legion Post 202 in Topsham and Lincoln E. Clements AMVETS Post 13 in Durham, where he served as post commander and state commander.

Joe is survived by his five children, one son, Bill St. Michel and his wife, Kathy, of Durham; four daughters, Charlene Tobey and her husband, Carroll, of Lisbon, Betty St. Michel and her husband, Dan Melton, of Mississippi, Peggy Therrien and her husband, Scot, of Lisbon, Ginny Johnson and her husband, Dave, of West Virginia; three stepchildren, Ann Obar of Florida, Ben Spillman of Florida, and Lynn Spillman of New Hampshire; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his two wives, Helena Quarton St. Michel in 1969 and Janet Spillman St. Michel in 2015.
