FORT KENT — An email sent to a northern Maine business earlier this week alerting local residents that a Michigan man wanted for murder in that state was in Aroostook was incorrect, according to the Allegan County, Michigan, sheriff’s office.

The suspect was last seen in the Rangeley area of western Maine in February, but there is no indication that he has been in Aroostook, according to Capt. Mike Larsen of the Allegan County sheriff’s office.

“The intent of that email [sent to Allagash] was to remind folks in the area of the situation,” Larsen said Friday morning. “There have been no updates or new information since February 5th.”

Police in Michigan said 66-year-old Harold “Butch” Knight strangled his wife, Sara Knight, in January. Investigators believe Knight then traveled to Maine, ditched his car in Franklin County and dyed his hair and mustache black.

He was last spotted in the Rangeley area in February just before the weather turned cold and very snowy in that region, Larsen said.

“We are putting out the information again to keep the story fresh in peoples’ minds,” Larsen said. “We are kind of hoping as the spring thaw goes along he may be moving around [and that] as people open up their cabins [they] keep a look out in case he may have been staying in one.”

There is no indication or information that Knight is now or has ever been in northern Maine, Larsen said.

It is believed that Knight may still be in the western Maine area and may attempt to cross the border into Canada, Larsen said.

In February, witnesses in Rangeley reported seeing Knight and said he had asked about snowmobile trails.

Knight and his wife once lived in Turner.
