SCARBOROUGH — Maine’s House Speaker and Senate Democratic leader are preparing to visit Scarborough to discuss their tax overhaul plan with residents.
House Speaker Mark Eves and Senate Minority Leader Justin Alfond will hold a town hall meeting at Camp Ketcha on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
It will be the second event that Democrats have held since they unveiled their alternative proposal to Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s tax plan earlier this month. The first one in Bangor last week drew more than 100 people.
Democrats are accusing the governor of trying to give tax breaks to the wealthy at the expense of lower-and-middle-class residents. But LePage says that Democrats’ plan doesn’t go far enough to slash taxes, which he says is crucial for stimulating Maine’s economy.
