CANTON — The annual Parks and Trails Committee will hold its seventh annual flower fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Canton Heritage Park.
“This has been the main fundraiser for the Parks and Trails Committee, but last year, we had less plants to offer,” resident Sue Gammon said. “The fundraiser depends on donated plants, and we had less than normal last year, so we decided to cut it back to one day.
At previous town meetings, funding was approved for the Parks and Trails Committee, but “it’s hard to completely rely on town funding, because you never know what’s going to happen,” she said.
“Every dime we make goes toward the maintenance of the Canton Heritage Park and the Whitney Brook Trail, and equipment to help maintain them, such as weed-whackers and mulch,” she said.
Residents will have the chance to purchase perennials and house plants at the fundraiser.
Gammon said that the committee has agreed to use some of its extra money to hire someone who can help maintain the park and the trail.
“The members on the Parks and Trails Committee are getting older, and we can’t always keep up with all of the work that needs to go into the park,” Gammon said. “We figured that with some of the extra money, we can hire someone for the season.”
In addition to hiring help, Gammon said the committee hopes to organize educational workshops centered around different topics, such as invasive pests and identification of native plants, trees and shrubs.
“We’d like to get more children and younger people involved with our town’s parks and trails,” Gammon said. “We’re hoping these workshops will help.”
The fundraiser will also feature a raffle for handmade quilts, and the option for residents to rent yard sale tables for $20.
