1922 – 2015
AUBURN — Robert W. McKeone, 92, passed away at the Androscoggin Hospice House on Wednesday, May 27.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Celine (Landry); his sister, Jeannie Cochran of Winthrop; his daughters, Nancy O’Keefe of Naples, Fla., and Linda Winans of St. Charles, Ill.
He lived and worked in Lewiston and Monmouth his entire life, except during World War II, where as a proud member of the Second Marine Division, he was authorized to wear the Presidential Unit Citation with ribbon and star for action at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during the assault on Tinian on July 8, 1944.
Following the war, he worked in the shoe industry, making his way from a driver to a foreman. In the early 1970s, he built a home on Sand Pond in Monmouth, where he resided for over 30 years. Six years ago, he moved to Montello Heights, where he and Celine resided until his death.
He enjoyed walking, watching sports, building furniture and following the stock market. For years, he and Celine would spend the winter months in Florida with their daughter, Nancy, where they would walk along the beach for miles every day. He read the Wall Street Journal from cover to cover every day and was a self-taught financial whiz. At age 80, he learned to use a computer and from then on began trading stocks online.
A great father, a loving husband and a friend to many, he will be missed by all those whose paths he crossed.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Montello Heights and the Androscoggin Hospice House for their devotion and loving care.
