RUMFORD — The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition will collect hazardous household waste from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Region 9 on River Street in Mexico, as part of the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments’ Household Hazardous Waste collection program.

Patricia Duguay, Executive Director of the RVHCC, said that examples of household hazardous waste include cleaners, solvents, chemical lawn fertilizers, weed and insect killers, swimming pool chemicals, driveway sealers, rat poison, mothballs and rechargeable batteries.

One item that will not be accepted at the collection is latex paint, Duguay said, since it is “water-based and not hazardous.”

“Look for the words ‘latex,’ ‘water-based,’ or ‘clean up with water’ on the label,” she added.

According to AVCOG’s website, one-day collections are held throughout towns in the Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford county regions, where they are subsequently transported to the Environmental Depot in Lewiston.

Duguay added that the collection is meant for River Valley residents, and that “businesses are not eligible to participate.”

For more information on the collection, contact Duguay at 364-7408.
