FORT KENT, Maine — A 62-year-old man was killed attempting to bring down a tree at his home Friday afternoon, according to Fort Kent Police Chief Tom Pelletier.

Lowell Guerrette of Fort Kent was attempting to pull down a large tree at his 8 Spring Street residence by attaching a cable to it from his compact tractor after he had made a notch in the tree using a chainsaw, Pelletier said Monday afternoon.

The saw had become stuck in the tree, and it appears Guerrette was trying to free it by pulling the tree with the tractor, Pelletier said.

In the process of pulling the tree with his tractor, Guerrette was thrown from the machine and struck his head on the tractor’s roll bar, the police chief said.

Guerrette was found by his wife shortly after the accident lying next to the tractor.

Attempts by emergency responders to resuscitate Guerrette were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene because of blunt force trauma, according to Pelletier.
