WATERVILLE — A local woman is facing multiple charges after crashing her vehicle into porch steps with her 17-month-old daughter on board, while allegedly high on drugs, police said.
A resident heard a vehicle driven by Heidi Everson, 42, smash into the steps of a front porch shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday and called police, according to Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey.
Massey said the vehicle went up a small incline before crashing into the porch area. Nobody inside the house was injured.
Everson’s daughter was riding in a child safety seat but not strapped in, Massey said, and the impact sent the baby tumbling into the car’s seats.
Everson, whom Massey said was not cooperative, was taken, along with the child, to a local hospital for observation, and while there attempted to leave a treatment area and assaulted a hospital staff member, the police chief said.
Once both parties were cleared, police contacted the Department of Health and Human Services to take custody of the baby, and Everson was taken into custody, Massey said.
The baby was not seriously injured.
Everson was booked on charges of operating under the influence of drugs, a Class C felony due to priors, assault, endangering the welfare of a child and driving to endanger, Massey said.
Everson’s car was demolished and the damage to the porch area was significant, Massey said. The chief added it’s fortunate nobody was walking along the sidewalk near the crash site and that the baby wasn’t seriously hurt.
Everson remained at the Kennebec County Jail Monday.
