LIVERMORE — Five-year-old Baylee Brown wanted to do something to help people who have cancer. She also wanted a lemonade stand, just for fun.
So when the opportunity arose to do both, she took it.
Her father, Josh, built her the stand. Her mother, Aimee, her 3-year-old sister, Sophia, and other family members helped with decorations, preparations and sales. Baylee had a sign that stated, “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade” to accompany her stand.
Baylee made $62 selling lemonade, doughnuts and brownies at the Tainter/Simoneau’s Fight For a Cure event, which included a golf scramble at Maple Lanes Golf Course Saturday in Livermore. The event helps community members and raises funds for the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. It also raises awareness of brain cancer.
Initially, she thought she would sell the items to girls for $1 and $2 to the boys because they eat more, Baylee said. She then decided she would sell them for a $1 each.
“I wanted to do it to help people,” Baylee said.
She had no problem handing over the money she made for the benefit.
“It felt good in my heart,” she said.
Baylee knows about cancer. Her mother finished her last cancer treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma on May 27.
This community in particular is very supportive of people with cancer, Aimee said.
“There has been a lot of people affected by cancer,” she said.
On the day of the event, Aimee asked Baylee if she was ready to do the stand.
“I was born ready,” Baylee said.
She sold everything.
“It was a lot of work, but fun,” she said.
