1924 – 2015
CANAL FULTON, Ohio — Colman L. “Coke” Sanders, 91, of Canal Fulton, Ohio, passed away early Sunday morning, June 7.
He was born in Evansville, Ind., on Feb. 20, 1924, a son to the late J. Stanley and Annie (Johnson) Sanders. Coke spent his boyhood in the village of Turner before arriving in Massillon in his midteens. He attended Massillon Washington High School until enlisting in the Army during World War II. He completed his studies while in the service, honorably serving with the 835th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater.
Following his time in the service, Coke joined his father and older brother, Pitt, in what was to become the family business, Progressive Chevrolet, now Progressive Auto Group, where he held the positions of vice president and auto dealer until his retirement.
He loved his wife and family and cherished the time they spent together. A dedicated steward of creation, he especially enjoyed the outdoors and the opportunities to camp and fish.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Gloria J. (Vogelgesang) Sanders; son, Stanley H. Sanders; his sister, Lillian (Sanders) Arend; and brother, Charles P. Sanders.
Coke is survived by his children, Dan (Corinne) Sanders, Ted (Gloria) Sanders and Sue (David) Underwood; 10 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
