AUBURN — Police said two men were injured when three motorcycles crashed on Route 4 near the Turner line early Sunday afternoon.

Police said two of the men were riding their motorcycles abreast while attempting to pass a southbound vehicle. One of the riders turned into the other rider in an effort to avoid the vehicle, police said. The third rider, who was following the other two, turned into a ditch to avoid crashing into the other riders.

Russell Keene, 24, of Livermore suffered a broken leg and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He was riding a 2000 Honda and had turned right to avoid a vehicle in the left lane. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The rider with whom Keene collided was Shawn Whiting, 23, of Sabattus, who also was thrown from his 2003 Harley-Davidson. He also was not wearing a helmet. He suffered abrasions, but was not taken to a hospital.

The third rider, David Lord, 25, of Livermore, stayed on his motorcycle, which landed in a ditch, police said. He was not injured and his 2007 Harley-Davidson was not damaged.

The other two motorcycles were towed.
