1921 – 2015
SANDY RIVER PLANTATION — Gertrude B. Spiller, 93, of Sandy River Plantation passed away on Wednesday, June 10, at the Sandy River Center in Farmington, where she had resided for the past six months.
She was born on Dec. 25, 1921, in Woonsocket, R.I., the daughter of Henry and Evelina (Menard) Shea. Gert was educated in the schools of Woonsocket and graduated from Woonsocket High School in the Class of 1938. She married Harold Spiller Jr. on Aug. 17, 1955, in Woonsocket, R.I., and they made their home in Sandy River Plantation, where they lived ever since.
For many years, Gert served as the tax collector. Later on, she drove the school bus for Sandy River Plantation. She also worked as the office manager for H. A. Furbish Insurance Co. in Rangeley.
Gert was a member of the Rangeley Lakes American Legion Auxiliary Post 120, St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Womens Club. Gert helped out with many Legion and Masonic suppers and was very giving of her time for town functions and craft fairs. She also loved flower gardening.
She was a very loving, caring and extremely generous person, making donations to many, many causes.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Harold “Hack” Spiller Jr. of Rangeley; her two daughters, Virginia “Ginny” and husband, James, of Rangeley, and Barbara Lowell of Rangeley; her two granddaughters, Catherine Lowell of Strong and Lisa Lowell of Stratton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Christine Lowell.
