JAY — Selectpersons upgraded the town’s personnel policy recently to make municipal buildings and grounds tobacco-free areas. There was already a prohibition on smoking on the properties.
Both the town’s fire stations had also already been smoke/tobacco free facilities and grounds, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
The board added the Fire Rescue Department to the personnel policy on June 8 and decided to amend the policy to reflect the existing tobacco rules of the department.
Selectpersons added the Town Office and Police Station at 340 Main St. and the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Jerry Street in North Jay to be tobacco-free zones in addition to the existing smoke-free status.
The Town Recreation Area Use Agreement approved by the board in May set the recreational areas of French Falls, Jay Village and Dow Field as smoke/tobacco free areas.
Smoking and tobacco use have been prohibited at the Regional School Unit 73 schools, buildings and grounds in Jay for more than a decade.
