LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen on Tuesday approved a bid of $156,445 from J. Pratt Construction of Hebron to improve Park Street sidewalks.

Town Manager Kristal Flagg said bids were opened before the most recent selectmen meeting, but a contract could not be awarded until the state checked out the contractors.

The town will contribute $31,000 toward the project, while the state will pay the rest, she said.

Other bids were submitted by Castonguay Excavation, $162,003.88, and St. Laurent & Son, $217,690.

“We’d like to have someone local do it, but if it’s state money, you have to go with the lowest bidder,” Selectman James Collins said.

Wright-Pierce is engineering the improvements.

In other news, selectmen reviewed bids for a police cruiser and awarded the contract to Quirk in Augusta for $27,629. Other bidders were: Bailey Brothers in Livermore Falls, $28,985.95; Farmington Ford of Farmington, $28,559.44; and Rowe Ford of Auburn, $29,900.50.

Livermore Falls Police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said he had reviewed trade-in prices for a Ford Explorer and a Crown Victoria the department is trying to get rid of. The highest value quoted was $4,400 for the Explorer and $2,500 for the Crown Victoria.

Steward said it would be better to sell the two vehicles because the town would likely be able to get more money for them. They will be sold at different times, he said, to allow the Police Department to use some of the equipment from each in the new police vehicle.

Steward said that it will be 12 weeks before the cruiser comes.

The board also looked at three bids for the highway department building roof. All three were from Livermore Falls firms: Tom Frazier Construction, $26,014; Dana Allen, $30,468; and Bill Webster, $31,500.

Selectmen voted 5-0 to award the contract to Tom Frazier Construction, subject to fluctuations in cost for materials and labor.

Flagg was complimented for volunteering to sand and repaint the Shuy Cemetery sign.
