PORTLAND (AP) — Maine’s largest city is allowing a medical marijuana festival to take place in one of its most prominent public spaces on August 9.

The Portland City Council unanimously approved plans for the New England Cannabis Farmers Market Festival at its Monday meeting. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Deering Oaks.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1IgY35e ) reported the event will connect medical marijuana caregivers to registered patients and no cannabis will be sold or consumed.

Sponsor New World Organics expects 2,000 people to attend the free event. Friends of Deering Oaks Park endorsed the event.

The event will be the second pro-marijuana rally in Deering Oaks in recent years. It will be the first since residents passed a city ordinance to legalize marijuana in 2013.
