1939 – 2015
RUMFORD — Ernest “Al” Legere, 76, of Kennebec Street, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, at his residence following a courageous battle with ALS.
He was born in Rumford on Feb. 18, 1939, a son of William and Florida (Langteigne) Legere. Al was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School, Class of 1957.
He was employed for 40 years with the Rumford paper mill and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Al married Shirley (Belskis) while serving in the U.S. Army; together, they have celebrated 53 years of marriage. After retirement, they spent 16 years as snowbirds in Englewood, Fla.
He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior and a member of the American Legion and the Eagles.
He developed a love of golf, achieving three holes-in-one. He also loved bowling, basketball and playing horseshoes and poker.
Al loved woodworking, landscaping and remodeling, and he always found a way to make something out of nothing.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley (Belskis) Legere of Rumford; four children, Donna Luck and husband, Richard, of Claverack, N.Y., Brenda Knox and companion, Al Lloyd, of Rumford, Michael Legere and wife, Suzanne, of Rumford, and Jerry Legere and wife, Christine, of Portland; a sister, Odie Cayer of Palmetto, Fla.; two brothers, J. William “Bill” Legere and wife, Dot, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Roger Legere and wife, Francoise, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Steven, Rich, Nicholas, Jeremy, Brittany, Sadie, Ben, Nate, Matthew, Elaina, Andrew and Alison; a great-grandchild, Gannon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Jeannine Belskis.
