JAY — The Jay Village Water District has issued a boil-water order until further notice.

Officials said the notice will be in effect until a break in a waterline on Main Street is fixed and water service is restored.

Only the customers who lost water need to boil it, officials said.

The waterline break Thursday afternoon was described as major. By early Thursday evening, a crew was still working on repairs.

Once water returns, officials said, the district is required to bring samples to a laboratory in Augusta to be tested for E. coli and coliform bacteria. The district will announce when the boil order is lifted.

According to Water District Superintendent Mike Wells, effected customers should boil water for one minute. That includes water that they plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes. After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator for later use, officials said.
