BETHEL — A 2-year-old boy was rushed to Maine Medical Center last Thursday afternoon after he was run over by a riding lawnmower at a Barker Road residence, Oxford County Deputy Sheriff Matt McDonnell said Tuesday.
McDonnell said the incident happened at about 11:23 a.m. He said the Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the child or his grandmother, who was driving the lawnmower at the time of the accident.
“The kid was in a wagon getting pulled by his grandmother on a riding lawnmower and she went to back up and didn’t look behind her and the 2-year-old fell out of the front of the wagon onto the ground,” McDonnell said. “When the mower ran over the child, the blade cut his rear end.”
McDonnell said he didn’t know the extent of the injuries but said they were not life-threatening.
“The grandmother went into panic mode and drove the child to Bethel Rescue (station) in Bethel and an off-duty deputy was there and he called the accident in to us,” McDonnell said.
Bethel Rescue took the child to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway and PACE ambulance took him from there to the Portland medical center.
“It was a good-sized lawnmower with two different blades and the grandmother said that apparently the child’s father gives him rides like this, but it was just a reckless thing to do,” McDonnell said.
