RUMFORD — The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition announced Thursday that Sherwin Williams in Rumford will no longer collect waste paint after Aug. 1.

Coalition Executive Director Patricia Duguay said the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste Board is working on setting up a collection site at another location, and residents will have to hold on to their waste paint until then.

However, Duguay said there are other ways to dispose of latex paint in the garbage, as long as it is dried out first.

“Add equal parts kitty litter to latex paint in the can,” Duguay said. “Stir the cat litter into the paint until it has an oatmeal-like consistency that will not spill out. Allow the paint and cat litter mixture to sit for one hour, and throw the dried paint in the can in the garbage with the lid off.”

Duguay said commercial paint hardener can be used in lieu of cat litter, and for very small amounts of paint, residents can paint it on cardboard or newspaper, and discard the newspaper or cardboard in the garbage once it dries.
