Ladies golf tournament
Thirty-five ladies came out to support women who face breast cancer. For the third year, four-person teams competed in an 18-hole scramble for prizes at Maine courses.
The winning team, with a tournament record low of 3-under-par 67 was comprised of Lorraine Carlton, Melanie Chasse, Michelle LeClair and Carol Nichols. Second place was claimed by Sue Riekert, Karen Bor, Ricky Christensen and Jayne Toncer. Sue St. Pierre, Karen Hardy, Deb Finley and Jackie Kilbreth placed third.
Other prizes went to Melanie Chasse for the longest drive on the No. 1 hole and Lorraine Carlton for her shot closest to the pin on the par 3 No. 6 hole.
On completion of play, participants enjoyed a lunch and the awarding of raffle items donated by 40 supporters. A special raffle of a breast cancer-themed quilt made by Ruth White of Kingfield and donated by Faye Chadbourn. The quilt was won by Colleen Kirksey.
Camp Susan Curtis golf tournament
The Camp Susan Curtis golf tournament, which helps Maine children in need to develop habits and skilsl for lifelong achievement, will be be held at The Woodlands Club in Falmouth on Aug. 17.

Veterans committee plans on golf tourney
The Western Maine Veterans’ Advisory Committee (WMVAC) continues to prepare for the 5th annual golf tournament to be held on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Springbrook Golf Course. The golf tournament is sponsored by WMVAC to raise funds for the activities program at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris.
During the tournament, a winning ticket will be drawn to receive a brand new John Deere riding mower. Tickets are on sale at the Maine Veterans’ Home at 477 High Steet in South Paris. Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25. Tickets may be purchased through the mail by sending a check to Joe Cooney, chairman, 477 High Street, South Paris, Maine 04281. There will only be 800 tickets sold.

Golfing FORE! Kidneys’ tournament
The fifth annual ‘Golfing FORE! Kidneys’ tournament will held on Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Brunswick Golf Club in Brunswick. All proceeds benefit the Maine Transplant Program’s Patient Assistance Program at Maine Medical Center.
The event is designed to bring awareness of kidney health, kidney disease and s kidney transplantation.
The tournament is scramble format with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration begins at noon. Cost is $95 per player and includes a great day of golf with cart and a delicious buffet dinner. Maine Celebrity Golf Classic
The Maine Celebrity Classic will be held July 28 to 29 at Sugarloaf in Carrabasset Valley. Not only will you have the time of your life, but all funds go towards youth programming at the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center.
Attending the event are national sports celebrities and well-respected athletes as Sugarloaf regular and snowboard cross Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott; 2004 World Series winning pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Keith Foulke; Boston Bruins powerhouses Rick Middleton and Bruce Shoebottom; New England Patriots Hall of Fame Linebacker Steve Nelson; up-and-coming U.S. Ski Team star, Samuel Morse; and longtime Boys & Girls Clubs supporters from the Major League Baseball Players Association Mike Torrez, Skip Lockwood and Bruce Berenyi. Local media celebrities Steve Minich and Mike Violette round out the crew who will all be on hand for photo opportunities.

Healthcare Golf Classic nets $25,000
More than $25,000 was raised at Franklin Community Health Network’s (FCHN) annual Healthcare Golf Classic held at the Sugarloaf Golf Club. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Healthy Community Coalition (HCC) of Greater Franklin County and the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center.
Twenty teams from throughout New England took part in the event.
Franklin Printing comprised of Greg and Ann Nemi, Devon Smith and Dan DiPompo took first-place gross at the tournament — a four-person scramble. Other winners were Team Webber with second gross that included Peter Webber, Seth Wescott, Karl Strand and Dana Bullen. Third gross was Franklin Memorial Hospital’s team of John Arsenault, Mark Malone, Quinn Allen and Joe Francoeur.
Nason Mechanical comprised of Rick Murphy, Fred Hall, Jr., Jeff Bolduc and Greg Bubier took first-place net, followed by Western Mountain Financial Services in second place consisting of Jared Ranger, Matt Casavant, Kris Orrok and Tom Bureau, and the Kyes Insurance team of Rock Bjorn, Flint Christie, Jill Perry and JB Christie placed third.
The tournament featured closest-to-the-pin and longest drive contests. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Karl Strand, Seth Wescott, Dave Cota and John Cureton, while the men’s and women’s longest drive winners were Tom Bureau and Sarah Klein.
5K Fun Run at the University of Maine at Fort Kent
The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host a summer 5K Fun Run on Saturday, Aug. 1.
The race will be open to all age groups and race time is set for 9 a.m. Race-day registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the UMFK Sports Center. All participants who walk, run, or sponsor someone to run will receive a race T-shirt. A rain date has been scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 2.
The fee for the race will be $20 per person and $10 for each additional family member, with proceeds to benefit the Dylan R. Levesque Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Racers will compete in four different age groupings, under-age 18, age 18 through 29, age 30 through 44, and age 45 and up. Prizes will be given to the top male and female winner from each division.
