WILTON — The Board of Selectpersons agreed Tuesday to change the town office hours on two days of the week only.

The new hours for Mondays and Tuesdays only will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting on Aug. 3.

Hours will remain the same for the rest of the week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and closed to the public on Wednesdays.

Early in the week, the staff has noticed residents try to get in to the office before it opens at 9 a.m. and few customers are there after 4:30 p.m., Town Manager Rhonda Irish told the board.

Later in the week, on Thursdays and Fridays, customers tend to come later in the afternoon so she was not recommending a change for those days.

People seem to want to get here before they go to work, she said about the first of the week.

The board agreed to try the new hours for a few months and revisit the discussion at their Jan. 4 meeting to see if the change was making any difference.

In other business,  the town will offer online Rapid Renewal of vehicle registrations starting on Sept. 1, Irish said.

“It is not without cost to us,” she said of a $250 expense for software and an additional annual software fee of $150.

The town will also not receive the $3 from each registration done online. That goes to the state, she added.

Many towns are making the opportunity to re-register vehicles online available. Credit and debit cards can be used but the customer pays the fee for using these instead of the towns. Checks can be used without any extra charge, she said. The form provides information on how to list account and bank routing numbers so the fee can be withdrawn from checking accounts.

It takes a couple days to get the registration in the mail but a temporary form can be printed off and used until the permanent one arrives, she said.

The board appointed Micheal DeRusha to serve on the Recreation Committee and Richard Bragg to serve on the Appeals Board.

DeRusha is a parent and coach and Bragg has served as an alternate on the Appeals Board. After member Dawn Brann resigned due to a move, Bragg was asked to step up and serve full-time on the board, Irish said.
