OXFORD — Members of American Legion Post 112 will dedicate the American Legion Concerts in the Park series in memory of Rep. Ted Heidrich on Tuesday evening, July 28.
Tuesday is the first concert of the 2015 summer series.
The concerts will be renamed The Ted Heidrich Memorial Concerts, “to honor the man who started these concerts years ago,” Post Commander Ed Lyons said.
The dedication ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Legion Post on King Street, with a performance by the 195th Army National Guard Band immediately following. The dedication will be attended by Heidrich’s widow, Eleanor, and Sen. James Hamper, R-Oxford.
In case of poor weather, the event will be held inside the Post 112 hall.
Heidrich, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, served three terms in the Maine Legislature from 1999-2004, where he became known as an advocate for veterans. He died in 2010.
At the time, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, issued a statement praising Heidrich, saying, “As a Korean War veteran who served in the Marine Corps, he was a tireless advocate for our veterans and remained active in several state and national veterans’ service organizations. As a dedicated state representative in the Maine Legislature, he embodied the true spirit of public service, and his contributions will be remembered for years to come.”
In addition to founding the summer concert series in Oxford, he also founded the Western Maine contingent of the Marine Corps League.
The Heidrichs were well known in the community as Christmas tree farm owners. One of their trees was placed on the site of the World Trade Center’s ground zero following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Tuesday’s concert is free and open to the public.
