DIXFIELD — The 38th annual Outdoor Market is adding a golf ball drop this year, the planning committee decided Wednesday evening during a meeting at Ludden Memorial Library.

Dixfield Outdoor Market Committee Chairwoman Deb Morang said people can purchase a golf ball to be dropped from the ladder truck of the Dixfield Fire Department toward a hole in the ground.

“Each person that buys a golf ball will be assigned a number, and that number will be written on their golf ball,” she said.

The person who gets their ball in the hole, or the person who gets their ball closest to the hole, will win $200 or more, depending on who many people sign up, committee member Kristi Holmquist said. If two golf balls land in the hole, or are equidistant from the hole, the payout will be split between the two winners.

The balls are $5 each or five for $20. They will be sold at the town gazebo at the Outdoor Market on Sunday, Aug. 16. The market is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The golf balls were donated by Nick Waugh of Peru, chairman of Friends of Peru Elementary School.

“I think Nick deserves a lot of credit here too,” Morang said. “He’s really helping us out by donating the golf balls for us to use.”

The Outdoor Market began around 30 years ago, under the direction of Norine Clarke and her late husband, Ralph. Dozens of crafters, service agencies, community organizations, school groups and others set up booths offering a variety of items.
