1924 – 2015
AUBURN — Adelbert Ackley Roberts, 90, of Buckfield passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 4, in Auburn.
He was born in Whiting to Roy and Effie (Ackley) Roberts.
Adelbert, affectionately known as “Del,” grew up on a saltwater farm in the East Side of Machiasport, where he was raised by his Uncle Carroll and Aunt Florence Crocker as their son.
He graduated from Washington Academy in 1942, and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, during which time he received the Medal of Valor. He later graduated from the University of Maine at Machias.
Del was a member of the First Congregational Church in Durham and Warren Lodge in East Machias. He was also a proud member of the Masons.
A lifelong educator, Del taught in schools in Lincoln, Lisbon and Gray-New Gloucester, where he was an elementary school principal for many years.
Del enjoyed hunting and fishing, but he mostly enjoyed all the special times with family and friends at camp.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Leona; two sons, Barry Roberts and wife, Paula, and Donald Roberts and wife, Lee; grandchildren, Rebecca (Roberts) Chandler, Buckley Roberts, Bernard Roberts, Shilo (Roberts) McManus, Donald Roberts Jr., Phoebe Roberts and Skylar Roberts; and 10 great-grandchildren.
