AUBURN — The mystery lady of Greene has been identified.
Within hours of asking the public for help, police said they had identified the woman found walking in Greene on Wednesday night.
“The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank everyone for their assistance in this matter,” Lt. Glenn Holt wrote in a news release. “The lady has been tentatively identified as Jessica Green, 41 years old out of the Augusta area. She is currently safe at a medical facility and can now receive the treatment that she needs.”
If anyone finds a piece of green- or black-colored roll-around luggage in the Greene area, he or she is asked to contact the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department at 207-753-2599, according to the release.
Sheriff’s deputies Friday afternoon had appealed to the public for help in identifying the woman.
Police said the woman seemed unable to tell them her name when she was found walking Wednesday night.
Police issued a written statement at about 2 p.m. asking the public for help. The story went viral online before the identity was made public just before 8 p.m.
By 7 p.m., a Sun Journal brief about the police statement had been shared more than 300 times on Facebook.
