DIXFIELD — The 38th annual Dixfield Main Street Outdoor Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, rain or shine, planning committee Chairwoman Deb Morang said.

The Outdoor Market began around 30 years ago, under the direction of Norine Clarke and her late husband, Ralph. Dozens of crafters, service agencies, community organizations, school groups and others set up booths offering a variety of items.

All money raised goes toward community organizations and events, including the Dirigo High School Boys and Girls State, the River Valley Easter Egg Hunt and the Dixfield Halloween Walk.

Morang and committee member Kristi Holmquist said there are new activities this year, including a self-guided canoe and kayak trip down the Androscoggin River. Residents can rent a canoe for $35 or a kayak for $30, courtesy of Stony Brook Campground in Hanover.

Transportation to and from the Mexico boat launch will be provided from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. by Regional School Unit 10. Students with Dirigo High School’s Class of 2017 will help launch kayaks and canoes between 10 and 11 a.m., while another group of students will be at the Dixfield Opera House.

All money raised will go toward the Class of 2017,  junior Bryce Whittemore said.

“A lot of the money will probably go toward our prom, and anything left over will go toward Project Graduation during our senior year,” Whittemore said.

Those with their own canoe or kayak can participate in the trip, too.

Other new events this year include a golf ball drop and a petting zoo.

Gunner Bradbury, the coach of the Dirigo High School cross-country team, is heading up a 5K race/walk at 9 a.m. at the Dixfield Village Green.

A quilt show and tea party will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dixfield Congregational Church.

Booth spaces are available for $25 by calling 562-8006.
