LIVERMORE FALLS — The 29th annual Bowman Field Fly-In this weekend will feature planes from all over the Northeast and beyond at Bowman Field in East Livermore.
The gates open at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 and 30.
Asked why the fly-in has remained popular, Darlene Bates said, “I would say that in this area, it’s free and anything that’s free is popular. It’s an area where you can go down and look at the planes. There’s something for everyone.”
People have flown in from as far away as Florida to take part in the festivities, which are organized by the Bowman Field Flying Club. Events are held regardless of the weather.
There is a candy drop Saturday and Sunday, where a plane deposits candy on the field as children scramble to gather it up. There are games in a hangar for children, a Federal Aviation Administration safety seminar, and a yard sale with donated items. Bates said proceeds from the yard sale go toward maintaining Bowman Field.
There will be plenty of food available, with a full service food shack and ice cream. On Saturday night, a spaghetti and bean supper will be served. Cold Blue Steel will play from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday.
Helicopter and airplane rides will be part of the fun. Bowman Field is accessible by seaplane via a free shuttle.
There will be free admission and free camping; campers must be over 18. T-shirts, hats and door prizes will be available.
