RUMFORD — A carnival is coming to the Hosmer athletic complex this Thursday through Sunday.
Kavanaugh Amusements, which has been to this area three other times, twice as a fundraiser for the Mexico Fireman’s Relief Association, will be fundraising for the Fourth of July Committee of the Rumford Parks Department.
Committee member Dan Richard, in a phone conversation with carnival owner Andy Kavanaugh, said, “It won’t cost us a dime. The only thing they ask for is power and water for their trailers. They’ll give us 20 percent of the ticket fees that we can have to put back into our show.”
He said the carnival will include five “kiddie” rides and four adult rides, plus cotton candy and games for the family. Kavanaugh said one of the adult rides will be the Rock-O-Plane — a 40-foot-high ride similar to a Ferris wheel.
The times of the carnival will be Thursday and Friday, 4 to 10 p.m.; Saturday from 1 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
As to where the Fourth of July Committee stands financially at this time, Parks Superintendent Michael Mills said, “I do know it’s three-quarters to where we started last year. In other words, we asked for $9,500 (from Rumford cable franchise fees). I may be wrong, but I think we’re almost there. So by asking again next year should put on the trail to almost being self-supporting. I’m not saying that the year after we’ll be self-sufficient, but we’ll be awful close to it.”
In April, the committee raised $4,000 with a performance by comedian Bob Marley in Rumford.
