AUBURN — Douglas C.S. Kurtz, 54, died on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Lewiston. He was surrounded by his loving fiancée and family, dear friends and the wonderful health care providers at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Doug’s good nature, playfulness and sense of humor enriched the lives of a large circle of friends. He is remembered above all for this wonderful sense of humor and humane, kind spirit.

Doug graduated from Oxford Hills High School and Bridgton Academy. He later attended Slippery Rock State University. He was a stellar athlete and enjoyed football most of all. In addition to his love of sports, especially the Patriots and the great game of golf, Doug was always the life of a party, quick to make others laugh, and was very caring. He shared his mother’s passion for animals and adored babies and children. His ability to care for others, especially those in need, made the world a better place.

Douglas was a great chef, and he enjoyed the great Maine outdoors as a year-round fisherman. He never shied away from a lively political debate and always held true to his beliefs.

The greatest loves of his life were his two daughters, Alinda Sullivan Kurtz and Prentiss Marie Kurtz. He was immensely proud of Ali, who graduated from the University of Maine and will be attending graduate school in international security studies in Canterbury, England, and of Miss P, who is a senior at Oxford Hills High School, excelling at both athletics and academics.

In addition to his daughters, Douglas is survived by his fiancée, Wendy Gagne; his father, Ted Kurtz; sisters, Rebecca, Hilda and Amelia Kurtz; a niece, Cynthia; and nephews, Mitchell, Owen and Wesley.

He was predeceased by his mother, Paula Kurtz.

While Douglas lost his battle with alcoholism, his family holds great hope that others may find the help that he was unable to during his lifetime so that they may find recovery and beat the disease.
