Central Maine Board #20 is offering basketball a five-week rules course for people interested in becoming a certified basketball official. Farmington Rec Dept. instructional soccer

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Rec Department instructional soccer program, directed by Jaycee Jenckes, gets underway starting Sept. 13.

The program will be split into two divisions. Division I consists of first, second, and third graders, while Division II is fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.

Registration is Aug. 31 through Sept. 10 at the Farmington Community Center, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The registration fee includes a team jersey.

Registration is $25 for Farmington residents and $35 for non-residents. Registrations will not be taken over the phone and a $5 late fee will be added after the registration period. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Bridgton Hospital Golf Tournament

Player registrations and sponsorships are now being accepted for the Bridgton Hospital 25th Anniversary Golf Tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd at 8:30 a.m. at Bridgton Highlands Country Club. This long-standing tournament will benefit the Bridgton Hospital Emergency Department Renovation Project.

Players will experience a new tournament structure complete with bag valet service, breakfast, barbecue lunch and hors d’oeuvres, along with high-quality player favors and more.

The Bridgton Hospital Emergency Department is planning an expansion of the waiting room to allow for greater accessibility and comfort in the waiting area for the roughly 14,000 patients served annually in the emergency department with particular attention to wheelchair bound patients. The Bridgton Hospital Golf Tournament will help raise funds to assist in this major renovation project.

UMF  longtime soccer coach Leib to be honored

The University of Maine at Farmington cordially invites the public to a daytime field dedication and an evening celebration in honor of longtime UMF and community soccer coach Robert Leib on Saturday, Sept. 5.

The University and UMF Athletics will dedicate the soccer field at Prescott Field to Coach Leibat 1 p.m., between soccer alumni games. Stewart Durrell and Seth Woodcock, former UMF athletes and co-chairs of the Campaign for Leib Field, will speak at the dedication ceremony.

In addition, a festive celebration of Leib’s career, including sentiments from former players and a video tribute, will take place at 7 p.m., in North Dining Hall in the Olsen Student Center. Both events are free and open to the public with the request that individuals interested in attending either event contact Lisa Gallant, at lisagall@maine.edu or 207-778-7090 or RSVP on the UMF Athletics website at www.goUMFbeavers.com.

Leib coached UMF men’s soccer from 1977 to 2001 and UMF women’s soccer from 1996 to 2007. The men’s soccer teams tallied a program-best 15 wins in 1982 and again in 1996. The 1986 men’s soccer team and the 2002 women’s soccer team both advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. In 2007 in his final season coaching women’s soccer, UMF went undefeated through North Atlantic Conference play with a 9-0-1 mark.

Farmington Rec Dept. soccer sessions

FARMINGTON — There will be a series of soccer sessions in September put on by the Farmington Rec Department. The Lil’ Kickers club offers parents the opportunity to spend quality time with their3  and 4 year olds while learning about soccer. Children will be guided through age appropriate soccer exercises.

The Skills and Drills sessions are at 9 a.m. on Saturdays starting Sept. 12 and continuing through Oct. 10. A Medal Madness session takes place Saturday, Oct. 17 at 9 a.m.
