TURNER — Town Manager Kurt Schaub told selectmen Tuesday evening there will be public hearings this month on General Assistance and a liquor permit.
The hearings will be held in conjunction with the board’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at the Town Office.
The liquor permit is requested for Trenchy’s Place, which has a new owner and requires a new permit. The General Assistance hearing will focus on maximum levels of assistance.
In other business, Fire Chief Michael Arsenault in his monthly report said all equipment is running, all inspections are current and the department is current on all state paperwork. He said he’s looking for a new pickup truck to replace a 1993 model that won’t pass its next inspection.
The Fire Department hosted a joint exercise with the Buckfield Volunteer Fire Department to hone motor vehicle extrication skills, he said. Two vehicles were donated for practicing techniques.
The department is interested in conducting training with the Turner Rescue Department.
In her report, Rescue Department Assistant Chief Lisa Bennett said they responded to 75 calls during August.
Rescue Chief Toby Martin will conduct an Emergency Medical Response course in January. The neighboring town of Leeds is interested in starting an EMR team.
In other news, Schaub said site work has begun for switching to single-sort recycling at the transfer station. An educational brochure is being prepared by the town office and Casella, the town’s recycler. Copies will be given to residents.
Thomas and Darlene Heikkinen reported on their progress in cleaning up their junkyard and showed photos of their work. There are still about 75 cars to be removed.
“We will be understanding,” Selectman Ralph Caldwell said. “It is when people don’t do anything for months that we get upset.”
The Town Office and selectmen have received numerous complaints about speeding motor vehicles on Route 219 near the Bear Pond beach. While the town has no jurisdiction over that state road, it has contacted the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and the state Department of Transportation to enlist their help.
