LIVERMORE FALLS — The Regional School Unit 73 board reminded parents Thursday that classes start about an hour later on Wednesdays so teachers can participate in workshops.
The issue was raised at the board meeting because Chairwoman Denise Rodzen said she heard “rumblings” from parents about the late start. She said an explanation will be posted on the RSU 73 website.
The board also received an update on food programs.
Dora York, food service director, said she is short two staff members. She said the district recently received a grant that will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to students in Jay and Livermore elementary schools and the middle school. Livermore Elementary School also received a grant for a steamer, she said.
York said her department is taking steps to meet the needs of children whose parents are expected to be laid off from Verso Paper Co. The paper mill recently announced plans to layoff 300 employees later this year.
About 55 percent of RSU 73 students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, York said.
Superintendent Kenneth Healey was appointed interim business manager until the position is filled. Stacie Field resigned to become business manager for RSU 16 in Poland.
Also Thursday, Healey said the administrative team is expected to conduct strategic planning for the district during the next few months. This will include looking at buildings and grounds for the next five to 10 years.
The board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at the Central Office.
