BETHEL – The West Parish Congregational Church will host its annual CROP Walk at noon Sunday, Sept. 27, to raise money to relieve hunger locally and globally.
CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.
The 3-mile walk will be around the village and participants will gathering pledges.
Church member Jane Chandler said the church has held a CROP Walk for 10 years and raised more than $30,000. The walk is a primary way Church World Service raises money for national and international disasters.
“Church World Service provides assistance to over 80 countries, responding also to the quiet devastation of hunger, poverty and disease, which might not make the evening news, but shatters lives as surely as a hurricane or tsunami,” Chandler said.
While a majority of the money raised at the Sept. 27 walk will go toward Church World Service and its global efforts, Chandler said, 25 percent will go to the Bethel Food Pantry. The number of families utilizing the pantry has increased from 45 to 90 since last year, she said.
Before the walk, a picnic will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the West Parish Congregational Church.
