FARMINGTON — A Carthage man pleaded guilty Friday in Franklin County Superior Court to assaulting his wife at their home in April.

Robert L. Carver, 73, was accused of strangling and terrorizing his wife April 17, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said previously.

Carver pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence assault.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail, a $2,000 fine and two years of probation.

The state dismissed felony charges of aggravated assault and domestic violence criminal threatening in a plea agreement.

Justice William Stokes approved an agreement Carver must abide by if he wants his plea withdrawn in a year. Conditions are that he have no contact with the victim and comply with any protection from abuse orders.

Nichols said in April that the woman escaped the home and fled to Rumford Police Department to report the incident. She told police her husband “was very intoxicated and had access to a loaded shotgun and a handgun which was in the bedroom,” according to Nichols. The woman also told police Carver told her he had a plan just in case she left, the sheriff said.

Police surrounded the home, contacted Carver and he surrendered without incident.
