PORTLAND — Lewiston was in the wrong place at the wrong time to encounter an angry Cheverus football team.
One week after getting trounced 57-0 at Thornton, the proud Stags rolled up the first 56 points of the game Saturday afternoon and pasted the Blue Devils, 68-16, at Boulos Stadium.
Rylan Benedict and Tre Fletcher each rushed for three touchdowns to lead Cheverus (2-1). Justin Johnson produced a pair.
Lewiston (1-2) scored its two touchdowns consecutively late in the third quarter and early in the fourth.
Jeremy Madore punched it in from 2 yards out. Jared Rubin connected with Desmond Jackson for the two-poijnt conversion.
Later, Roman Dennis found the end zone from 9 yards away. Jackson rushed for the conversion.
It was all Stags, otherwise. Cheverus fattened its lead by converting on its first second two-point conversion tries.
Johnston had a 19-yard run and 71-yard punt return to make it 16-0.
Also in the first quarter, Benedict scored from 14 yards and Fletcher, a freshman, picked up his first varsity touchdown from 34.
Benedict added a 4-yarder to make it 40-0 early in the second period. Johnston’s 81-yard ramble set up a 3-yard Benedict burst, and Fletcher flew to paydirt from 57 for a 56-0 halftime cushion.
Fletcher did it again from 57 yards in the fourth quarter. Finn Cawley capped Cheverus’ scoring with a 2-yard rush.
