Eryn Doiron notched a pair of goals, pulling the senior to within three goals of tying the all-time career goal scoring mark at Mt. Blue. Doiron has 10 this season and 41 in her career with the Cougars. She is chasing the all-time mark of 44, set by Ashli Spear (1987-1990).
“Eryn has been a consistent player for us during her career,” Mt. Blue coach Fred Conlogue said. “She has been carrying a lot of the scoring load for us this season. Today, we finally started to get contributions from other players.”
Consistent pressure from the Cougars’ midfield of Caitlin Kane, Lauren Guppy and Sierra Hoes helped Mt. Blue (4-4) build a 19-1 advantage in shots. Working the ball along the ground caused plenty of problems for the Lawrence (1-7-0) defense.
A quality through pass from Kane left Doiron alone at the 18, where she ripped a hard shot at the Bulldogs net. Lawrence keeper Kayla Spencer made the initial stop, but the ball squirted loose, rolling over the line for a 1-0 lead at 18:40 of the first half.
Doiron and Kane were back on the attack two minutes later, when Kane sent a ball by the Bulldog defense to Doiron standing inside the penalty area. From the top left, Doiron whirled to fire a left footed shot across the face of the goal, settling into the right corner for a 2-0 advantage.
“We are starting to develop a lot of new things in our game,” Doiron said. “Our ground passing was coming along great, today, and we are really learning how to move off the ball.”
Lawrence battled hard throughout the game, but the intensity and combination play from Mt. Blue proved to be too much to overcome.
“Our team has a lot of heart, no quit and we keep on playing,” Lawrence coach Peter Spears said. “We have to work on settling the ball in game situations but I was pleased with our effort.”
Mt. Blue improved it’s lead to 3-0 with 11:39 left in the half when Haley Caswell found a loose ball on the right side of the goal after a wild scramble in the middle. Caswell calmly tapped the ball into the open net.
The lead ballooned to 4-0 just 57 seconds into the second half. Lawrence’s second half keeper, Morgan Boudreau, made a diving safe on a long ball from the outside, the ball parried off her hands, falling to the feet of Kane, who tucked it into the left corner for the final score.
Lawrence nearly finished the game without a shot but forward Hannah Walsh struck a solid ball from 14 yards out with six minutes remaining, to give the Bulldogs their lone shot of the game.
