1921 – 2015

AUBURN — Constance G. Currie, 93, of Auburn died Friday, Sept. 25, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born in Van Buren on Nov. 21, 1921, the seventh child of 17, to Thomas and Gertrude (Gagnon) Ouellette. She was a resident of the Lewiston and Auburn community since coming to the St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1940. She graduated from the nursing school in 1943 at the top of her class and the first in the state. In June 1944, she married Merrill T. Currie at St. Joseph’s Church in Lewiston.

Throughout her career, Constance worked in various nursing capacities, the past 25 years in supervision at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of the Lewiston-Auburn Catholic community, volunteering whenever there was a need — whether cooking for the Lenten luncheons at St. Joseph’s or baking 65 apple pies for the St. Philip’s Christmas Fair. But her most beloved service was that of Eucharistic minister. She attended Mass daily and was a communicant of weekly Eucharistic Adoration. She had an incredible inner and physical strength which she gave full credit to God. On any given day, no matter what task was at hand, she could often be heard saying, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”

Throughout her life, she opened her heart and home to many, hosting several gatherings a year for all occasions. She was always on a mission, whether it be picking strawberries, blueberries or apples, canning or baking. She loved being outdoors, tending to her yard and many flower gardens.

A special thanks to her grandchildren, Evan, Ganan and Caitlyn, who were often by her side during her illness and throughout her life.
