Lewiston lawmaker appointed chairman

AUGUSTA — Rep. Michel Lajoie, D-Lewiston, has been appointed House chairman of the Municipal Volunteer Working Group.

The working group will study issues related to recruiting and retaining volunteers for community emergency workers. It was formed as a result of a bill passed last session, LD 500, which received unanimous support from the entire Legislature.

Republican Committee to meet

LEWISTON — The Androscoggin County Republican Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce meeting room, 415 Lisbon St.

All county committee members and interested, registered Republicans are welcome.

Citizens Cribbage League results

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Oct. 1 were, in first place, Gene Brown and Don Haley; second place, Andrea Metayer and Henry Maheux; third place, Bob Allen and George Bussiere; fourth place, Connie St.Pierre and Diane Torres; and fifth place, Stan Tetenman and Dick Saucier.

The next game will be played at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8.

AAA hosting free car care clinics

AUBURN — AAA will host free car care clinics throughout Maine during October as part of October’s Car Care Month.

AAA automotive professionals tour each of the Northern New England states performing prewinter vehicle check-ups that include checking: tires, fluid levels, windshield wipers, battery, charging system, brakes, lights, belts and hoses. No appointment is necessary.

The local clinic will be in Auburn from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Shaw’s Plaza, 600 Center St.

AUBURN — The Pleasant Note Coffeehouse will present Open Mic & Poetry Slam at the First Universalist Church of Auburn, 169 Pleasant St., at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

Since 2006, this free monthly show has drawn people of all ages who share the spirituality of music and spoken word.

Free Clothes Closet Oct. 10

AUBURN — East Auburn Baptist Church, 560 Park Ave., will host a Free Clothes Closet for one-day only from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

The church is giving away clothing, shoes, purses, gloves and hats for men, women and children.

Pownal church hosting harvest supper

POWNAL — North Pownal United Methodist Church will host its Annual Harvest Supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

On the menu is baked ham, potatoes, onions, carrots, turnip, cabbage, corn bread, apple and pumpkin pie, apple crisp, cold apple cider and hot coffee.

The cost is $10 for age 13 and older, $4 for ages 4 to 12 and free for those younger than 3.

CUMC hosting bean, casserole supper

LEWISTON — The Calvary United Methodist Church will host its monthly baked bean and casserole supper Saturday, Oct. 10.

Serving time will be 4:45 p.m. at the Bartlett Street Garden entrance.

Cost of the meal is $7.50 for adults and $3 for children.

The menu will include assorted baked beans, hot dogs, biscuits, casseroles (including vegetarian), salads and homemade pies.
